A Pulley
1. A pulley is a wheel that turns around an axle.
2. A rope goes over a pulley and used to connect the load with the effort.
FIXED PULLEY
3. The above diagram shows a fixed pulley.
4. When the rope is pulled, the load is pulled up.
5. Examples of fixed pulley are :
a) the pulley for rising or lowering a flag
b)the pulley for lifting a
heavy object
6. It makes easier to lift a heavy object by changing the direction of the
force.
7. The force needed to move the load is usually greater that the load.
8. The didtancr moved by the load is equal to the distance moved by the
effort.
MOVABLE
PULLEY
Movable pulley
1. A movable pulley does not change the direction of the force.
2. Both the effort and the load move in the same direction.
A pulley system
2. A pulley system consists of a fixed pulley and a movable
pulley.
3. It changes the direction of the force and enables us to use less
force to lift the load.
4. An example of a pulley system is shown below.
A crane
5. A crane uses
fixed & movable pulleys to lift very heavy loads.
